V70 D5 SE, MY2003 Weird one this, I thought I was imagining it but I actually watched it happen today! The back light illumination on the mileometer and clock readout is going from bright to dim and back again (never seen it go bright again but it must be happening). It is not engine load or speed related. I have factory fitted HID DRL's. Is there a sensor that monitors outside light levels? For example if I'm out in the open the illumination is dim but if I drive under tree canopies where its darker the backlightng increases? Thats the only thing I can think of! Any ideas? Not a major problem but is it a pre-cursor to computer meltdown?

My 2000 2.5D SE has been doing it for 2 years with no other symptoms, so I don't think it's anything to overly worry about. But don't quote me on that!!!!!! Chris

It is suppose to dim according to the light levels!! The sunlight sensor is part of the little red flashing alarm light in the middle of the dash. Mines will always be dim at night but goes up and down in daytime unless in bright sunshine. Look at it as another strange Volvo feature!!! Enjoy it. Bob

Andy As others say, it is supposed to do that. The lights are meant to be bright in the daytime and dim in the night. However, around dusk mine does tend to get confused, especially if you drive down a tree lined road where there are shadows. Its definately nothing to worry about. Nice car by the way. Exactly the same as mine except yours is clean. A bit O/T I know but what tyres do you have on and does it tramline? I have Michelin Premacy (sp?) and its dreadfull. Cheers Martin
