The Mackie Big Knob is pretty nice, I used it for over a year. I now monitor through a HUI. They're just attenuator knobs. I set the above to unity and adjust my powered monitors to the proper SPLs

I never thought of adjusting the level on my KRK V8's because the control for it seems so inaccurate. This makes more sense though, b/c then I could crank the Big Knob all the way and know that I'm at the proper SPL for monitoring. Now I just have to borrow my buddies SPL meter to setup... Are there any other products similiar to the Big Knob that just act as attenuators?

The NHT PVC (passive volume control) is a simple box with a very high quality stereo attenuator & balanced XLR/TRS ins and outs in a 1/3 rack space footprint. They work great for adjusting the level of your monitors without coloring the sound. They cost around $175 list.
