Please bear with me, as I'm new to this program, but not recording. I open a new session, and import a MIDI file that I have. Next I see the mixer with the six or so MIDI tracks there. All tracks inputs are are set to 'ALL' and all outputs are set to 'NONE". In both places, the only possible choices are my SC-88 (MIDI box). There's no provision for sending any signal to ANY outputs! How the heck do you get to hear or use anything? My goal is to use MIDI tracks for my backup band and add audio tracks, and add a Master track. This should be basic 101, but there were no instructions included that tell me how to usse MIDI tracks and actually hear them. And they said it was easy, when I bought it! Thanks, to anyone willing to help an otherwise intelligent newbie.

MIDI tracks only handle MIDI... No audio You have 2 options: 1 Use MIDI tracks to hold your MIDI info and use aux input tracks to bring in audio from externally triggered synths or plugin instruments placed on the inserts of the aux track.. 2 Use instrument tracks, which really just combine the features of MIDI and Aux input tracks into a single track. They are very convenient.. If you want to record the audio in either case, you will need to bus the audio output to an Audio track. Read in the manual about instrument tracks for more details.

Thanks. Nothing is working. This is so friggin' confusing. I've been working on it for two nights, and still can't get a simple MIDI song to play! I haven't even recorded anything yet! Unbeleiveable! So, I setup seven instrument tracks. I imported a 7 track MIDI file into the regions area. I dragged each region to a respective track. These instrument tracks are taller and like two tracks in one. Well, the top half showed something going on when I hit play, but I couldn't get the bottom audio half to do anything. I tried every damn option and selection. Still no sound being made. The 'manual' is so brief, it doesn't tell you how to use these tracks. It really doesn't tell you a thing about how to use anything. It just describes what the features are. Who the hell came up with this stuff? My frustration is off the meter, when good software should be somewhat intuitive, this is unbearable. I suppose I'm going to trying to get through to a tech support person tomorrow, the second day into my free 30 day period. Ha, like anyone anywhere ever gets through to one of those.
While we're at it, why don't we complain to Digi that we can't hear anything without speakers or headphones connected to the outputs of our audio interface. They should fix their software, it's Digi's fault that I haven't patched my hardware properly. Pro Tools should be able to read my mind and move gear around my room!

Thanks for all the replies. Well, I have made some progress. I called Tech Support at 8AM, and after the obligatory 5 minutes of keypad options and pre-recorded messages, I got to a tech. Now that I have audio cables from the MIDI box outs to the Mbox aux inputs, there is now sound. As dumb as it sounds, there still was no instruction on connecting outboard gear. I think DD believes that everyone buying their products for the first time has already had a career in a recording studio. So it seems that I will need a separate aux track that will just monitor all my MIDI channels. And when I mixdown and send to disk later on, I'll need to also send that MIDI aux track to yet another audio track that will act as a master fader just for the MIDI mix. Now I'll add my real audio tracks and use a another stereo Master fader for everything. This actually make logis sense to me. I may start enjoying myself soon....
